Spanish explorers

The US western and southern regions were first explored by the Spanish.

The Spanish established settlements in Florida and moved westward into present day Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, and Utah. They used conquistadors and missionaries to create Catholic settlements aimed at finding minerals especially gold and silver. New Spain was marked by cruel treatment of Native Americans as well as conversion to Catholicism.
