The |x| operator means 'absolute value' or the positive value of the negative values. To help this make sense, here's a visual representation:
[tex]|-8| = 8[/tex]

But,
[tex]|8| = 8[/tex]

Do you see what I mean? BTW, your answer will just be 8 + 8 or 16.

Lol, this is pretty simple (sorry if me saying simple makes you feel stupid, if it makes you feel any better I'm rlly stupid lol). Well just look at is normally as 8+8=   which would equal 16 :) I really hope this helps.
