I think I would rather be a slave in Rome in the later ages. Mainly because in the later ages of the Roman republic, they had granted some rights to slaves that made their position easier to handle. They could, for example, be granted voting rights, or could even be freed after some times, slaves were even allowed to file a complaint against their owner if he was not treating them correctly or something similar!
