The theory of Punctuated equilibrium is an evolutionary theory that states that once the species appears in the fossil record the population will become stable and it will show little evolutionary change.

The theory states that the species stay the same for a long time and then they change suddenly because of change in the environment as a result of that new species arise. It occurs when the environmental conditions are stable.
