Teratogens is the term that refers to substances in the environment that can cause abnormal fetal development.  These drugs, chemicals, or even infections should be avoided during pregnancy because they can cause a birth defect or abnormal fetal development. Alcohol  , Phenytoin (Dilantin), Varicella are some examples.
