Explanation:

This is a very simplified version, But the Egyptians made a thick paper called papyrus, from the papyrus plant. They cut the stems of the plant into thin strips, and laid it atop one another at right angles into multiple layers. They wettened the papyrus sheet and then beat it flat while it is still moist.
