What was the role of the supreme court in the protection of native american lands?

The Supreme court declared the northwest ordinance constitutional, meaning that the lands promised to natives by the US would be given to them. That being said, the land was very soon after, taken back when Americans expressed anger over the fact that they couldn't have that land.
