Why did the French establish settlements along the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence?

I don't think this belongs in the chemistry category. But. The French settled along the st Lawrence because the region had lots of animals that were valued for their fur (e.g. The Beaver) Also they settled there to colonize land and expand their territory.
