African Americans while free were still restricted to where they could live, where they could work and where they could obtain an education. The 14th amendment allowed African Americans could vote but Jim Crowe laws were put in place that made registering to vote almost impossible. African Americans were restricted as to where they could live and what schools they could go to. Many were uneducated and resulted in them being stuck working meinial jobs for meager pay.
