Deirdre McCloskey claims that the social acceptance of exchange as an honorable profession is what enabled the industrial revolution to take hold and flourish in 17th and 18th century Britain. Social disapproval of merchants acted as a brake, which prevented critical masses of capital from forming and growing in other societies at other times.

In other words: social values have a massive impact on market constraints.
